Daughter of Dr. Dalpat Singh & Sita Bhandari, she unlike other children received her primary and secondary education at home. Affected with polio at the age of three and half years Kusum’s body was paralyzed neck downwards. This virtually made her unable to lead a normal life.

But impossible was never the word for her and she has been the perfect example of the age old saying that says, “Where there is a will, there is a way”. Those who suffer themselves, best understand the pain that others undergo. Her struggle to fight against her physical incapability began then and along with this grew compassion, strong feeling to understand and relieve the pain of the disabled. After her master’s degree in political science, she joined the university as a lecturer in 1981.
