Kusum Bhandari was born on December 19, 1955, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, into a family that included her parents, Dr. Dalpat Singh and Sita Bhandari, as well as one brother and one sister. Unlike many children, she received her primary and secondary education at home.
At the age of three and a half, Kusum contracted polio, which left her paralyzed from the neck down. This condition presented significant challenges and made it difficult for her to lead a typical life. However, she exemplified the age-old adage, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” Her personal struggles enabled her to develop a deep compassion for others facing similar challenges.
Through her journey, Kusum cultivated a strong desire to understand and alleviate the pain of the disabled, turning her own hardships into a source of strength and empathy for others.
Education – Breaking The Ceiling
Sita Bhandari had a vivid vision for her daughter, Kusum. Despite the challenges posed by Kusum’s physical condition, Sita firmly believed in her daughter’s potential to teach and inspire others. Whenever her husband expressed doubts about Kusum’s future, Sita would confidently respond, “If no one offers her a position as a lecturer, I will open a college for her!” Her unwavering faith in Kusum’s abilities was a testament to her strength as a mother.
Fortunately, Sita’s vision did not require such drastic measures. Dr. Kusum Bhandari went on to become a beloved and respected professor at Jai Narayan Vyas University in Jodhpur. Her academic journey was marked by dedication and perseverance. After earning her master’s degree in political science, she joined the university as a lecturer in 1981, quickly earning the admiration of her students and colleagues alike.
Kusum’s commitment to education did not stop there. She pursued her PhD with remarkable determination, adding a law degree to her credentials along the way. This achievement not only showcased her intellectual prowess but also her resilience in overcoming obstacles. As a professor, Kusum became known for her engaging teaching style and her ability to connect with students on a personal level.
